Adrenaline
Adrenaline is a hormone produced naturally by the body. In surgery, it is frequently added to local anaesthetics. It acts as a vasoconstrictor and reduces blood flow to the operative field. Blood loss is thereby minimised, and the surgeon's visibility is significantly improved. Bruising within the operative field is also reduced. In plastic surgery, adrenaline is used, for example, in infiltration anaesthesia for liposuction. Its benefits must always be weighed against potential risks, such as those associated with certain cardiovascular conditions.
