Liposuction & body contouring in Düsseldorf

Liposuction & body contouring in Düsseldorf

Some fat deposits are stubbornly resistant – despite regular exercise and a mindful diet. Unevenly distributed fat can noticeably affect your silhouette and, with it, a positive body image. Water-jet and vibration-assisted liposuction are the most effective treatments available – and a key area of expertise at the practice of Dr. Schuhmann & Colleagues. Through targeted liposuction, we gently define your body contours and simultaneously tighten the tissue. Also available on an outpatient basis.

Our liposuction methods

When applied correctly, these methods are both tissue-friendly and highly effective. Also suitable for fat distribution disorders such as
lipoedema

.

Water-jet-assisted liposuction

(WAL):

A fan-shaped water jet gently detaches the fat cells from the surrounding tissue. The loosened fat is then aspirated and the body contour carefully sculpted. Performed under local anaesthesia on an outpatient basis at our practice in Düsseldorf, or optionally under twilight sedation.

Vibration-assisted liposuction (PAL):

Here, the fat cells are loosened using a finely oscillating cannula and then aspirated. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia at our partner clinic.

Combined with skin tightening & body contouring

Skin tightening procedures – Dr. Schuhmann Düsseldorf

As one of the few practices in Germany, we perform skin tightening using BodyTite and
Quantum RF

(innovations by US manufacturer Ignite). Both treatments can be combined with liposuction in the same session.

Quantum RF:

Focused radiofrequency energy stimulates collagen production and "melts" the fat cells – resulting in firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

BodyTite:

Minimally invasive radiofrequency-assisted liposuction (RFAL) to remove excess fat while simultaneously tightening the skin.

The treatment process – step by step

1. Individual consultation

We discuss your wishes and expectations, identify the most suitable treatment areas, and assess whether water-jet-assisted (WAL) or vibration-assisted liposuction (PAL) is the optimal choice for you. Your individual physical characteristics are always our primary focus.

2. Gentle liposuction

The procedure takes place on an outpatient basis at our practice or at our partner clinic. Through tiny skin incisions, a fine cannula is introduced to remove fat cells gently and precisely. If desired, we can tighten the tissue using radiofrequency in the same session.

3. Recovery & results

After treatment, you will wear compression garments for approximately six weeks to stabilise the tissue and minimise swelling. Physical rest during the first two weeks, along with supportive measures such as lymphatic drainage, promotes healing. Initial results are visible immediately, with the final outcome becoming apparent after approximately three months.

Long-lasting results!

Immediately after the procedure, you will already notice the first changes to your body contour. However, the final result will only become fully apparent over the following months, once all swelling has completely subsided. Once removed, fat cells do not return – your new body shape is maintained permanently. A healthy lifestyle remains important nonetheless, as remaining fat cells can enlarge again with significant weight gain.

Frequently asked questions

Who is suitable for liposuction?

Liposuction is not a question of age – anyone can optimise their contours through the permanent removal of excess fat cells. However, a prerequisite is that your skin is firm and elastic enough to adapt well to the new, improved shape. Otherwise, the absence of the fat deposits may lead to skin laxity.

When does liposuction make sense?

When it comes to fat deposits or skin laxity around the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks, targeted dietary changes and exercise rarely achieve the desired outcome on their own. In such cases, liposuction can be used to reshape the body contour. Localised fat deposits – which commonly appear on the abdomen, hips, and outer thighs (saddlebags) – respond well to liposuction.

How long does liposuction take?

The duration of a liposuction procedure depends on the areas to be treated and the volume of fat to be removed. As a general rule, the procedure takes 1–2 hours.

When will the results of liposuction be visible?

To appreciate the final result, patience is required. This typically becomes evident after approximately 6 months.

How is liposuction performed?

Liposuction is normally performed under local anaesthesia with pain relief on an outpatient basis, so you are able to leave the clinic on the same day. For more extensive liposuction under general anaesthesia, we recommend planning for one to two nights in the clinic. Immediately before the procedure, I mark the fat deposit areas to be removed and inject a solution (consisting of saline, local anaesthetic, and adrenaline to constrict the blood vessels) into the relevant areas. A cannula connected to a vacuum pump is introduced through a small skin incision. The vacuum pump aspirates the subcutaneous fat cells. The tumescent technique ("tumescence" = swelling), which we use, is based on infiltrating three times the volume of saline solution in order to swell the fat cells to be removed. Although this method takes slightly longer, it has the advantage that the solution can be enriched with sufficient anaesthetic, making additional sedation unnecessary.

Does the fat come back?

No, the fat does not return. Once aspirated, fat cells are gone and cannot enlarge again with weight gain. A treated area is less susceptible to weight fluctuations and remains proportionally slimmer than before liposuction. That said, it is still important to maintain a healthy body weight after liposuction in order to enjoy the beautiful results for as long as possible.

How many kilos will I lose with liposuction?

In a single liposuction procedure, up to 6 litres of fat can be removed. The amount that can be aspirated depends on the areas being treated. More fat is removed when treating the abdomen or thighs than when treating the knees or calves. Following liposuction, you can expect to lose approximately 2 dress sizes.
