Genioplasty

Genioplasty is a surgical procedure to alter the shape or position of the chin. It is performed when the chin is disproportionately recessed, excessively prominent, or asymmetrical in relation to the forehead, nose, and lips. As the chin plays a decisive role in determining the profile, a correction can visibly harmonise the overall facial proportions. In surgical genioplasty, the bony portion of the mandible in the chin region is osteotomised and repositioned. It is then fixed in place with small titanium plates or screws. This technique allows for precise three-dimensional correction: advancement, setback, or vertical adjustment. Alternatively, in cases of moderate deformity, contour improvement using autologous fat or fillers may be carried out where only soft-tissue adjustment is required. The decision to proceed with genioplasty is based on a thorough analysis of the profile, occlusion, and facial proportions.
