Mastectomy
A mastectomy is the complete or partial removal of breast glandular tissue. It is most commonly performed for medical reasons, particularly in cases of breast cancer or a very high genetic risk (e.g. BRCA mutation). Depending on the findings, only the glandular tissue may be removed, or additionally the skin, nipple, and surrounding structures. In many cases, breast reconstruction follows, either with implants or with the patient's own tissue (e.g. autologous fat or flap procedures). The treatment goal, alongside oncological safety, is the restoration of a natural body contour. Planning a reconstruction requires an individual analysis of skin quality, the scar situation, and tissue volume.
