Fat-Dissolving Injections vs. Liposuction

Unwanted fat deposits affect even slim people. Saddlebags, a small double chin, stubborn areas on the abdomen or upper arms. Stubborn zones that cannot be addressed even with sport and a careful diet.

What follows is research online, particularly on social media. The ultimate solution, advertised with before-and-after photos and quick promises? The fat-dissolving injection. Virtually without side effects and possible even during a lunch break. This sounds attractive and can be useful in certain cases. The reality is often more nuanced.

Why Fat-Dissolving Injections Are So Popular

The concept of fat-dissolving injections is appealing: a small injection without surgical intervention or downtime. In our practice, the treatment only takes a few minutes.

Fat-dissolving injections (injection lipolysis) can break down fat cells. The fat is then metabolised by the body, which independently breaks down the released cell components.

So far the advantages. What is less well known:

  • The result after just one session is minimal.
  • Multiple sessions are usually necessary.
  • The skin is not tightened.
  • Fat distribution remains uncontrolled. No contouring of the silhouette is possible.

In our experience, only around 10–20% of interested patients are suitable candidates for fat-dissolving injections.

A Significant Difference: Contouring of the Face and Body

With minimal, gentle liposuction, we can treat even the smallest areas. Fat is suctioned away with millimetre precision.

At the same time, we stimulate the tissue to contract and tighten. In the vast majority of cases, this treatment is more effective and more successful in the long term.

Why We Often Recommend Liposuction

1

Results in One Session

A fat reduction that requires at least 2 to 4 sessions with fat-dissolving injections can usually be achieved in a single procedure with gentle liposuction.

2

Better Shaping

With liposuction, we can model the silhouette and actively shape the fat distribution.

3

Higher Satisfaction

Results are more pronounced and visible more quickly. In our experience, patient satisfaction is higher.

4

Faster Visible Change

After fat-dissolving injections, initial minimal changes often only become visible after approximately 4 weeks. With liposuction, the new shape begins to emerge within just a few days, even if some residual swelling may still be present.

5

Cost Efficiency

Multiple injection treatments (fat-dissolving injections) add up quickly. A single, targeted liposuction is usually more economical in the long term.

Modern Liposuction Is Not a "Major Operation"

Many people think of liposuction as a major procedure. That is not the case.

With gentle, so-called minimal liposuction, we work with fine cannulas and minimal tissue trauma. Areas that can be treated include:

slim women with saddlebags
small double chin
jawline contouring
upper arms
male chest (gynaecomastia)
small abdominal areas
facial contouring

When Fat-Dissolving Injections Can Make Sense

Fat-dissolving injections (injection lipolysis, e.g. with deoxycholic acid preparations such as Aqualyx® or Belkyra®) are an option for minimal fat excess such as a small double chin or individual, softly defined areas, and when no skin laxity is present. Also when an invasive treatment is expressly not desired.

Their advantage lies in simple administration. No incisions are required and there is no downtime.

The most important thing is realistic expectations: results are mild to moderate, multiple sessions are often necessary, and contouring is less precise than with gentle liposuction.

What About Cellulite?

Cellulite involves structural changes in the connective tissue. In combination with biostimulators such as Sculptra® and liposuction, we can improve the structure and skin quality.

Why Many Patients Ultimately Choose Liposuction

The Clearer and More Lasting Result

An injection feels like less of a procedure than surgery – that is understandable. In practice, however, it often becomes clear: minimal liposuction delivers the clearer and more lasting result. It is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia and reduces excess fatty tissue in a controlled manner.

The suctioned fat cells are permanently removed – they cannot grow back in that location. Important to know: in the case of general weight gain, remaining fat cells elsewhere in the body can still increase. A stable weight after treatment is therefore part of the long-term result.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions do I need with fat-dissolving injections?

As a rule, 2 to 4 sessions are required before a noticeable result is visible – and even then the effect is usually mild to moderate. Initial changes often only become apparent after around 4 weeks. With gentle liposuction, the same result can frequently be achieved in a single treatment.

Does liposuction involve a long recovery period?

Modern, gentle liposuction is not a major procedure. It is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia using fine cannulas with minimal tissue trauma. The new shape begins to emerge within just a few days. Downtime is generally far shorter than most people expect.

Are the results of liposuction permanent?

The suctioned fat cells are permanently removed and cannot grow back in that location. Important: in the event of overall weight gain, remaining fat cells elsewhere in the body can still increase. A stable weight after treatment is therefore part of the long-term result.

Who is a good candidate for fat-dissolving injections?

In our experience, only around 10–20% of interested patients are suitable – for example with minimal fat excess, softly defined areas and when there is no skin laxity. For more pronounced findings or a desire for active contouring, we recommend gentle liposuction.
