Breast lift Düsseldorf: lifting and firming the breastsMastopexy at artethic® Düsseldorf

Welcome to breast lift surgery in Düsseldorf – your destination for aesthetic breast surgery. A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure aimed at improving the shape and firmness of the breasts. This procedure is often considered when changes in breast shape occur due to weight loss, pregnancy or the natural ageing process. Our experienced specialist surgeons in plastic surgery understand that every woman is unique, and offer individual solutions for lifting the breasts to restore the desired shape and contour.

A breast lift can address various aspects, including the shape of the breasts, the position of the nipples and the tightening of the skin in the breast area. This surgical procedure is carried out with precision to achieve an optimal result and to strengthen patients' self-confidence. Whether as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with other breast surgery procedures such as breast reduction, a breast lift can be decisive in achieving the desired aesthetic outcome.

The reasons for a breast lift can be varied, from adapting to changes following pregnancy and weight loss to correcting age-related loss of skin firmness. Our specialist surgeons in plastic surgery offer you a comprehensive consultation to understand your individual goals and develop the optimal treatment plan for you.

Discover the possibilities of breast lift surgery in Düsseldorf and trust in the expertise of our specialist surgeons to achieve a natural and aesthetically pleasing result. Breast lift costs (mastopexy): How much does a breast lift cost?

The cost of a breast lift depends on the chosen surgical technique and the extent of the breast surgery. Whether a breast augmentation or breast reduction is to be combined with the breast lift also influences the price.

We can provide you with the costs for your individual breast lift surgery, the costs for a breast reduction combined with a lift, and for a breast lift with augmentation, following a thorough examination and consultation. The price of a breast lift in Düsseldorf includes the operation, the anaesthesia, the surgical team and any overnight stay costs. Aftercare insurance for the breast surgery is also included in the total cost.

If you require financing for your breast surgery, we have found a competent financing partner who specialises in the financing of cosmetic surgery. With breast surgery instalment payments you can fulfil your wish for breast surgery and pay the amount, e.g. for a breast lift, in instalments. Our knowledgeable practice team is also happy to answer any questions about breast surgery instalment payments.

The most common reasons for a breast lift are age-related and natural skin laxity. Over time, the skin loses its elasticity and volume, which affects each patient differently. Whether due to pregnancy, hormonal changes, ageing or other factors – Dr. Schuhmann will address your concerns individually and personally.

What do I need to consider before a breast lift?

Approximately 2 weeks before your breast lift, you should avoid painkillers containing acetylsalicylic acid, such as aspirin, as their blood-thinning effect can cause unwanted post-operative bleeding. Nicotine and alcohol should be significantly reduced in the lead-up to breast lift surgery. Please also inform me directly during the initial consultation of any allergies or blood clotting disorders. A precautionary mammogram should also be carried out before a breast lift. The inpatient hospital stay is approximately 2–4 days.

You will find further questions about breast lift surgery in our breast lift FAQs.

How does a breast lift procedure take place in Düsseldorf?

Pre-operative examinations for the breast lift in Düsseldorf take place the day before the breast surgery. Depending on the surgical technique, the procedure takes an average of 2–4 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. Immediately before the procedure, I mark the incision lines directly on the breast area and prepare you for the operation. As the surgical approach always depends on the individual condition of the breasts to be lifted, three different breast lift techniques may be applied.

During a breast lift, an incision is always made around the areola (periareolar incision) to raise the nipples. A further vertical incision from the lower edge of the nipple to the inframammary fold is sufficient when the breasts are not excessively ptotic. In the case of a more significant correction, an additional horizontal incision along the natural breast fold towards the side ("L-shaped incision") is required; in other cases an additional incision is made towards the centre ("T-shaped incision"). During the operation, the breast glands are reshaped and lifted, and excess skin is removed so that the breasts achieve a new firmness.

The procedure leaves scars which, through the use of the finest sutures and a special suturing technique performed beneath the skin, will be as inconspicuous as possible. A breast lift carries low risks in our experience; however, complications during and after any operation are possible, albeit rare.

What should I bear in mind after a breast lift?

Immediately after the breast lift, the breast area is secured with a firmly applied tape dressing for a few days. The drains, which allow wound fluid to drain away, are removed one day after the procedure. Bruising typically resolves within just a few days. Any swollen areas subside within a few weeks. The feeling of tightness in the lifted breasts is relieved with pain medication.

After a breast lift, physical exertion (sport, physically demanding household and professional activities) should be avoided for approximately 4 weeks. Once the dressing has been removed, a well-fitting, non-restrictive support bra/sports bra should be worn for at least 6 weeks. To support the healing process after the breast lift, the bra should be worn both during the day and at night. Please bear in mind that during this time you must sleep on your back and treat your breasts with great care.

Avoid push-up bras for a further 3 months after the breast lift, and protect the surgical scars from intense sun exposure for at least 6 months. This will help you to positively influence the healing process. Health insurance very rarely covers the costs of a breast lift.

What breast lift techniques are available?

If you decide to have a breast lift, you should be aware that the procedure will leave scars on the breasts. Through the use of the finest sutures and a special suturing technique performed beneath the skin, I aim to keep the scars as inconspicuous as possible. If you wish to have a significant breast lift with reduction – for example, from a D cup to a B cup – the appropriate surgical technique must be selected accordingly. Depending on breast size and the desired result, I choose the most suitable surgical technique to lift your breasts:
Lift around the nipple (periareolar lift)
Scar-minimising vertical incision
Inverted-T (anchor) incision technique

The periareolar lift

Scar-minimising vertical incision

Inverted-T (anchor) incision technique

In the periareolar breast lift technique, the incision is made along the edge of the areola, running around the nipple. Via this access point, a moderate lift and also a reduction of the breast can be performed. This breast surgery technique can also bring the breast into a higher, more youthful position. A large areola of more than 5 cm does not suit a beautiful breast. Therefore, with this surgical technique, the areola can be reduced and the nipples (mammillae) corrected at the same time as the breast lift.

In the scar-minimising vertical technique, the incision for the breast lift runs around the areola. A further incision runs vertically from the areola to the inframammary fold. Excess skin is removed and tightened via this vertical incision, provided the breast is not excessively ptotic. For larger breasts with considerable excess skin, the vertical incision can extend laterally along the natural inframammary fold (L-shaped incision) to remove more skin and fatty tissue. An areola reduction and nipple correction can also be performed. The glandular tissue of the breast is repositioned significantly upwards during this breast surgery, giving the impression that the breast sits rather high. In the weeks following surgery, the lifted breast naturally settles into its position and the beautiful result becomes visible. Therefore, with this scar-minimising breast lift technique, the final shape of the breast is only apparent after several months.

In the inverted-T (anchor) incision technique, one incision runs around the areola and a second runs along the natural inframammary fold. These two incisions are connected by a vertical incision. The horizontal incision along the inframammary fold rarely extends inwards as far as the sternum, and ends laterally below the axilla. The nipples are also repositioned upwards. This technique is used when a significant correction of the ptotic breast is required, as it allows the effective removal of large areas of excess skin as well as fatty and glandular tissue. The natural result of the breast lift and the final shape of the lifted breasts can be clearly seen once the swelling has subsided.

Nipple correction and areola reduction

During the breast lift in Düsseldorf, we can perform an areola reduction at your request, as a large, dark areola may not complement a reduced breast as well. In rare cases of severely ptotic breasts, it may be necessary to detach the nipple completely. After the breast lift and reduction, the nipple is then transplanted back as a free graft. The ability to breastfeed cannot be preserved with this type of nipple correction. If preserving the ability to breastfeed is important to you, the nipple must be transposed together with the glandular tissue. However, even with this type of nipple correction (mammilla correction), breastfeeding difficulties may occur afterwards. For this reason, I recommend having a breast reduction and lift only after your family planning is complete.

Breast lift before and after

Under the German Therapeutic Products Act (Heilmittelgesetz), it is not permitted in Germany to display before-and-after images of breast surgery. However, I am delighted to show you the results of my breast lift operations during a personal consultation.

Frequently asked questions about breast lift and/or reduction

What can I achieve with a breast lift?

A breast lift can raise and firm the breasts. Nipples that have descended are also returned to a higher position. The surgery is performed using a very scar-minimising technique. However, fine scars will always remain after a breast lift. Depending on the surgical technique, these run around the areola and from the nipple to the inframammary fold. The scars fade over time and become increasingly less visible.

For a small breast, instead of a breast lift one might also consider a breast augmentation with implants or a breast augmentation using fat transfer to firm the breast. This can also restore the lost volume of the breast.

Of course, not only the size and shape of the breasts play a primary role in deciding on the appropriate approach, but also age, future family planning, weight stability, personal circumstances and further factors. In a thorough consultation I will advise you in detail and provide comprehensive information about the possible surgical options for breast lift surgery.

From what point can one have a breast lift?

A breast lift can be performed at any time. If a woman is dissatisfied with her breasts due to pregnancies, advancing age or poor connective tissue, she should consider a breast lift.

Here is a simple self-test: stand in front of a mirror. If the level of your nipples is below the inframammary fold, a clinician would describe this as ptosis (breast droop). Different degrees of severity are distinguished. However, this alone is not a reason to have a breast lift. Your personal feelings and wellbeing are the decisive factor for a breast lift procedure.

We recommend having a breast lift in autumn or winter.

How does a breast lift take place in Düsseldorf?

Pre-operative examinations for the breast lift take place the day before the ptosis correction surgery. Depending on the surgical technique, the procedure takes an average of 2–4 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. The breasts are precisely measured before the procedure. The incision lines are marked directly on the breasts. Depending on the patient's wishes and the individual condition of the breasts to be lifted, different techniques can be used during the breast lift:
Lift around the nipple (periareolar lift)
Scar-minimising vertical incision
Inverted-T (anchor) incision technique

How long does recovery after a breast lift take?

Recovery after a breast lift is highly individual and depends on the body's natural wound healing. However, you should avoid activities that place significant strain on the breasts – such as tennis, horse riding or heavy lifting – for approximately 3 months. Once the dressing has been removed, a well-fitting, non-restrictive support bra/sports bra should be worn for at least 6 weeks to support the healing process, both during the day and at night.

When do the breasts settle after a breast lift?

After a breast lift, the breasts settle into their natural position within 4–6 months of the ptosis correction surgery.

How long does a breast lift last?

The beautiful result of a breast lift lasts for several years. As skin ageing continues even in the delicate breast skin, changes to the lifted breast may occur with advancing age.

Can a breast lift be repeated?

YES, a breast lift can be repeated after a number of years. If changes in weight, the natural ageing process and gravity have significantly altered the breasts again, they can be re-lifted.

What are the contraindications for a breast lift?

A breast lift should only be performed once family planning is complete, if the wish to preserve the ability to breastfeed exists.

What are the risks of a breast lift?

A breast lift is a surgical procedure in which complications can always occur, such as post-operative bleeding, skin discolouration, swelling, impaired wound healing or hypertrophic scarring (keloids).

Can an implant be used during a breast lift?

In a breast lift with implant, the implant is primarily responsible for building up the breast volume. The added volume achieves a greater lifting effect on the breast. For small, ptotic breasts, a breast implant can be inserted during the lift to simultaneously augment the breast. In some cases, this breast augmentation with implant can even make a separate breast lift unnecessary.

How important is the surgeon's experience in breast lift surgery?

As with all plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures, the treating surgeon should have extensive experience in breast surgery. Since a breast lift is also a surgical procedure, the risks can only be minimised in the hands of an experienced surgeon. This ensures that you achieve the best possible result.

How long does one experience pain after a breast lift?

Behaviour after a breast lift is important for alleviating pain and supporting the healing process. Swollen areas subside within a few weeks. Wound pain with this procedure is relatively mild. The feeling of tightness in the breasts is relieved with pain medication. Bruising resolves within a few days of the breast lift.

Does a breast lift increase the risk of breast cancer?

A breast lift has no influence on the risk of developing breast cancer.

Can I still breastfeed after a breast lift?

After a breast lift, the mammary gland is preserved, so breastfeeding is generally possible. If preserving the ability to breastfeed is important to you, the nipple must be transposed together with the glandular tissue. However, even with this type of nipple correction (mammilla correction), breastfeeding difficulties may occur afterwards. For this reason, I recommend having a breast lift only once your family planning is complete.

Frequently asked questions

What can I achieve with a breast lift?

A breast lift can raise and firm the breasts. Nipples that have descended are also returned to a higher position. Fine scars remain but fade progressively. Alternatives for small, ptotic breasts include implant augmentation or fat transfer. Age, family planning, weight stability and personal circumstances all influence the choice of surgical approach.

From what point can one have a breast lift?

A breast lift can be performed at any time. Self-test: position yourself in front of a mirror and check whether your nipple position falls below the inframammary fold, which indicates ptosis of varying degrees. Personal wellbeing and satisfaction determine the decision. Autumn/winter timing is recommended.

How does a breast lift take place in Düsseldorf?

Pre-operative examinations take place the day before surgery. The procedure lasts an average of 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia. The breasts are precisely measured and incision patterns marked directly. The choice of technique depends on the patient's wishes and individual circumstances.

How long does recovery after a breast lift take?

Recovery after a breast lift is highly individual and depends on the body's natural wound healing. Activities that place significant strain on the breasts (tennis, horse riding, heavy lifting) should be restricted for approximately 3 months. A well-fitting, non-restrictive support bra/sports bra should be worn for 6+ weeks after the dressing is removed (continuously).

When do the breasts settle after a breast lift?

After a breast lift, the breasts settle into their natural position within 4–6 months of the ptosis correction surgery.

How long does a breast lift last?

The beautiful result of a breast lift lasts for several years. Skin ageing continues in the breast tissue. Age-related changes may occur over time.

Can a breast lift be repeated?

YES, a breast lift can be repeated after a number of years. If changes in weight, ageing and gravity significantly alter the shape of the breasts, a further lift remains possible.

The implant volume achieves a greater lifting effect. Small, ptotic breasts can be augmented at the same time. The combined approach can sometimes make a separate lift procedure unnecessary.

How important is the surgeon's experience in breast lift surgery?

As with all plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures, the treating surgeon should have extensive experience in breast surgery. Experienced surgeons minimise risks and ensure optimal outcomes.

How long does one experience pain after a breast lift?

Post-operative behaviour reduces pain and supports healing. Swelling subsides within weeks. Wound pain remains minimal. Feelings of tightness are treated with medication. Bruising resolves within days of the procedure.

Does a breast lift increase the risk of breast cancer?

A breast lift has no influence on the risk of developing breast cancer.

Can I still breastfeed after a breast lift?

After a breast lift, the mammary gland is preserved, so breastfeeding is generally possible. To preserve lactation, the nipple must be transposed with the glandular tissue. Complications that may affect breastfeeding remain possible. It is recommended to complete family planning before surgery.
