Every breast changes over time. It loses firmness after pregnancies, breastfeeding, weight changes or as part of the natural ageing process. Often the proportions no longer match how you feel about your own body.
With a breast lift we raise the breast and optimise its shape as well as the position of the nipple. The result: a natural silhouette that suits your figure and your wishes.

When can a breast lift be worthwhile?
For most patients it is less about size and more about an aesthetic position. Often there is a lack of volume in the upper part of the breast. The breast looks flat. Such an appearance is typical after pregnancies, breastfeeding or weight loss. In other patients, firmness is lacking, the tissue sags or the nipple has dropped.
Reasons for a breast lift:
- sagging breast after pregnancy or breastfeeding
- age-related loss of elasticity or weight loss
- congenital changes in shape
- lowered nipples
- a wish for a firmer, higher breast shape
What can be corrected?
A breast lift means: we raise the breast, remove excess skin and ensure an aesthetic position of the nipples.
Additional corrections are possible:
- balancing out asymmetries
- reducing the areolae
- adding volume (e.g. with autologous fat)
- harmonising the breast shape
Breast lift with or without an implant?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions in our consultations.
Breast lift without an implant
A voluminous breast can be given a new shape through the lift alone. The size is not significantly changed in the process.
Breast lift with an implant
If the breast lacks volume, an implant can complement the lift. Here the upper pole of the breast in particular is emphasised.
Breast lift with autologous fat
If more volume is desired, we can add it with autologous fat. This method is particularly suitable for slight to moderate corrections and is characterised by very natural results.
Which surgical technique?
Depending on the degree of sagging and the breast shape, there are different techniques:
- lift around the areola
- vertical lift
- T-incision / anchor incision
What all methods have in common: achieving a stable and aesthetically balanced result with the smallest possible incision.
The breast lift procedure
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. Afterwards, a special support bra is required for several weeks.
During the procedure:
- excess skin is removed
- the breast is reshaped
- the nipple is raised
- if needed, complemented with an implant or autologous fat
Results and durability
The new breast shape is visible immediately after the operation. Slight swelling subsides over the following weeks. The tissue needs to “settle”, and the final result develops over several months.
Ageing processes, weight fluctuations and pregnancies continue to affect the breast. Nevertheless, most patients benefit for many years from an improved shape and position of the breast.
Scars after a breast lift
A breast lift is not possible without scars. Depending on the technique, the scars run:
- around the areola
- vertically to the inframammary fold
- additionally in the inframammary fold
In the first months the scars are reddened and more noticeable. Over time they fade.
Risks and limits
Like any operation, a breast lift also involves risks. We inform you in detail and individually before the procedure.
The risks include:
- secondary bleeding or wound-healing problems
- infections
- temporary changes in sensation
- scar formation

Frequently asked questions
When is a breast lift worthwhile?
A breast lift can be an option when the breast has lost shape or volume and sags. Causes of a change in breast shape are pregnancies, breastfeeding, larger weight fluctuations or the natural ageing of the tissue. With a breast lift – and, if necessary, a minimally invasive lift – we achieve a firmer and more harmonious breast shape.
Is a breast lift enough or do I also need an implant?
That depends on the fullness and shape of your breast and on the result you wish to achieve. If there is enough tissue, the breast can usually be reshaped through the lift alone. If volume is lacking, especially in the upper part of the breast, an implant or, in selected cases, autologous fat can sensibly complement the lift.
What happens to the nipple during a breast lift?
During a breast lift the nipple is moved into an anatomically more suitable position. At the same time, enlarged areolae can be reduced if needed. For us at artethic Dr. Karl Schuhmann and colleagues, the primary treatment goal is a harmonious breast shape with natural-looking proportions.
Can I still breastfeed after a breast lift?
That depends on the surgical technique and the anatomical conditions. In most cases we can operate in such a way that important structures are preserved. However, there is no guarantee of being able to breastfeed afterwards. This topic is discussed in detail before the procedure, depending on the individual case.
Does the sensitivity of the nipple change?
Temporary changes in sensation are possible and no cause for concern. In most cases sensitivity returns to normal within the following months. Permanent changes are rare, but not completely ruled out.
How pronounced are the scars after a breast lift?
Depending on the findings, the scar runs only around the areola, vertically to the inframammary fold or as a so-called T-incision. Our aim is always the smallest possible incision with a long-term stable result.
How long does the result of a breast lift last?
In principle the lift is permanent. However, normal skin ageing, which continues after the procedure, weight gain, diets, hormonal changes or pregnancies also affect the breast shape after a successful lift.
Can a breast lift be combined with a breast augmentation?
After pregnancies or in cases of greater weight loss, we can combine the breast lift with implants or autologous fat. In addition to the shape and position of the breast, the volume can also be improved in this way. Depending on the individual case, this is possible within a single treatment.
How does a pregnancy affect the breast lift?
A pregnancy is still possible. However, the breast changes again during this time, which also affects the result of the breast lift.
From what age is a breast lift possible?
What matters is less the age than the physical development and the individual starting situation. As a rule, the prerequisite is completed breast growth as well as a conscious decision in favour of the procedure.
