Facelift Revisions

Almost one in three facelift operations at our practice is a revision. Reasons include:

  • visible or wide scars, particularly in front of the ear

  • a mask-like or artificial appearance ("Hollywood facelift")

  • asymmetries

  • selection of the wrong technique (e.g. a mini facelift for severely atrophic skin)

A secondary procedure is more demanding, as we must take scar tissue and altered structures into account. Dr. Karl Schuhmann, Dr. Lobe, and the medical team perform complex corrective procedures several times a week.

Scar Corrections

Conspicuous scars are among the most common reasons for reoperation. Particularly on the face, scars several millimetres wide can barely be concealed. In the course of a second facelift, the incision line can be corrected and repositioned along natural contours. Dr. Karl Schuhmann is a highly experienced surgeon and expert in virtually invisible scarring.

No "Hollywood Facelift"

The vast majority of our patients expressly do not want a mask-like appearance. A so-called "Hollywood facelift" with overtightened skin does not meet our standards. The goal of a facelift should be a rejuvenated yet authentic face with an individual and, above all, natural expression.

Eyelid Revisions

Common problems: incomplete and inadequate corrections.

  • Lower eyelid: Often only the under-eye bags have been removed, while wrinkles or malar bags remain unchanged. The solution: an extended lower eyelid lift that takes additional tissue areas such as the cheekbone region into account.

  • Upper eyelid: Unharmonious results when too much or too little skin has been removed. In the worst case, the ability to close the eye fully may be compromised.

Eyelid surgery is a demanding operation and a particular area of expertise at artethic® Dr. Karl Schuhmann & Kolleg:innen.

Revisions Following Breast Surgery

We perform corrective procedures following previous breast augmentations or lifts. A common problem: larger implants were placed without a simultaneous lift, resulting in an unharmonious overall appearance and a sagging breast.

At artethic® Dr. Karl Schuhmann & Kolleg:innen, breast augmentation and lift are combined to achieve a balanced and aesthetic body silhouette.

Revisions Following Liposuction

Liposuction alone frequently leads to unsatisfactory results — for instance, because too much or too little tissue was removed, or because the skin appears lax. A complementary lift is necessary in such cases to smooth contours and avoid asymmetries.

Dr. Karl Schuhmann, Dr. Lobe, and the entire team assess, prior to every corrective procedure, which techniques must be combined in order to achieve a stable and satisfactory outcome.

A comment we frequently hear from our patients is: "What a shame I didn't come to you in the first place." This highlights how important it is to take your time with your decision before undergoing any procedure.

The Costs?

The cost depends on the scope, operating time, and complexity of the procedure. Revision procedures are generally more involved and should therefore be budgeted higher than a primary facelift.

  • As a rough guide: a full facelift is approximately €15,500.

  • Every estimate is prepared on an individual basis.

All costs are presented transparently and fairly, including follow-up cost insurance. There are no hidden fees with us.

Frequently asked questions

In which cases is a revision facelift necessary?

In our practice, approximately one in three facelift operations is a revision — a corrective procedure. Patients come to us having experienced an unnatural appearance following primary surgery at other practices or clinics, including mask-like features, conspicuous scarring, and uneven tissue tightening. In some cases, the result is overtightened, or the improvement is no longer visible after just a few months. A common cause is a suboptimal choice of technique at the time of the initial procedure. Dr. Karl Schuhmann, Dr. Lobe, and the entire medical team at artethic® always recommend thorough counselling with a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery who has demonstrable experience and performs the relevant procedure — for example, facelifts — on a regular basis. At artethic®, our surgeons perform facelifts multiple times a week — both in Düsseldorf and at our Berlin location.

Can conspicuous scars following a facelift be corrected?

Scars that are too wide, poorly positioned, or otherwise conspicuous can generally be corrected surgically. As part of a revision facelift, the scar is repositioned and rerouted along natural lines — in front of the ear, along the hairline, or within skin folds — making it barely visible afterwards.

What eyelid revision procedures does artethic® perform?

With the lower eyelid, we quite frequently see cases where only the under-eye bags were removed, while wrinkles or so-called malar bags were left unaddressed. The result is therefore incomplete. At artethic® in Düsseldorf and Berlin, we almost always perform an extended eyelid lift that also encompasses areas such as the cheekbone and wrinkle correction. With the upper eyelid, it tends to be over- or under-corrections that we encounter. Excessive skin removal can even lead to functional problems — in the worst case, the patient is no longer able to close the eye completely. The good news: here too, satisfactory corrections are achievable in the hands of an experienced practitioner.

I feel anxious because I have had negative experiences with cosmetic surgery in the past. How do you approach this?

Many people come to our practice with uncertainty and scepticism. In addition to surgical expertise, this calls for empathy. We take the time to discuss your concerns and anxieties before you decide to proceed with surgery at artethic®. A revision procedure is not merely an external correction — it is also a step towards regaining confidence in your own appearance and in medical treatment.
