Mini facelift vs. traditional facelift: Why we don't recommend a mini facelift
On this page
A mini facelift seems like a good idea at first: it is a minimally invasive procedure that delivers fast results at low cost.
What many patients do not know until later: the effect is often not long lasting. About half of the patients who consult us for a facelift in our Düsseldorf practice have previously had a mini facelift elsewhere and are disappointed with the results.
At a glance
- Intervention depth: Mini facelift: skin only | SMAS facelift: skin + deep tissue (SMAS)
- Duration of results: Mini facelift: 5 to 9 months | SMAS facelift: 7 to 10 years
- Downtime: Mini facelift: short | SMAS facelift: somewhat longer, but manageable
- Cost: Mini facelift: approx. 2,500–3,000 EUR | SMAS facelift: higher, but long-lasting
What is a mini facelift?
For a mini facelift (also known as a soft lift or weekend lift), only the upper layer of the skin is slightly smoothed. The procedure usually takes less than two hours, involves smaller incisions and has a relatively short recovery period. At first glance, this seems ideal for anyone who wants a younger, fresher look without major surgery.
But this is where the problem lies: the deep tissue structures (SMAS), which are responsible for the actual shape and stability of the face, are not firmed.
Why we do not perform mini facelifts
At artethic Dr. Schuhmann & Colleagues, we have consciously decided against performing mini facelifts. In our experience, the results usually disappear again after a few months.
The skin has only been pulled at the surface and the underlying tissue that actually shapes and stabilizes the results has not been tightened. Just 5 to 9 months after the procedure, many patients report that the skin has once again started to sag, is no longer taut and they are frustrated.
The outcome: considerable effort, short-term effect.
The difference to the modern facelift (SMAS technique)
A facelift using the SMAS technique (Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System) not only repositions and firms areas of skin, but also the underlying muscle and connective tissue. The procedure is technically more demanding, but medically more sensible.
More natural results: defined contours and no pulled face.
Longer lasting: effects last up to 10 years.
Controlled rejuvenation: harmonious firming of cheeks, neck, chin line and mid face.
Can be combined with procedures such as an eyelid lift or neck lift for a uniform overall appearance.
Minimal sounds good, but is often too short-sighted
Many patients opt for a mini facelift because the procedure seems shorter and easier, requires less downtime and appears significantly less expensive than a full facelift.
Our experience in facelifting procedures has shown us time and again: for long-term, visible results, you need a procedure that does more than just move the skin.

Frequently asked questions
How long do the effects of a modern facelift with SMAS technique last?
Usually between 7 and 10 years. The exact duration depends on the skin type, lifestyle and care after the procedure.
Is the mini facelift really a gentler procedure?
Only superficially. It may seem less invasive, but it also has less significant and shorter-term effects.
How long is recovery time after a SMAS facelift procedure?
The first phase (de-swelling, removal of stitches) lasts around 10-14 days. Most patients can return to social activities after about 2 weeks.
Are there skin rejuvenating alternatives to a facelift?
In some cases, minimally invasive methods such as radiofrequency treatments may be an option. Whether these are sufficient depends on your individual findings.
What does a facelift at your practice in Düsseldorf cost?
The cost of a comprehensive facelift with SMAS technology starts at around 5,000 euros. An individual treatment plan is created after a personal consultation.
