The WAZ reports on two doctors from the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Hattingen who use their annual leave for humanitarian missions abroad. Whilst Dr. Alfred Klassen performs surgery in South Sudan, Dr. Karl Schuhmann supports projects in India.
Commitment with Heart and Hands
The missions demonstrate how important plastic surgery expertise is in regions with limited healthcare provision. Beyond operating, the focus is always on training local teams and strengthening structures.
A Look at the Projects
South Sudan – Hospital Mission
Consultant Dr. Alfred Klassen supports a hospital in South Sudan for 14 days. On site he treats emergencies, trains teams and stabilises theatre workflows.
India – Interplast Operations
Dr. Karl Schuhmann travels regularly to Bangalore. Focus: burns and reconstructive procedures for children and adults.
Why This Commitment Matters
- Improved quality of life for patients who would otherwise have no access to plastic surgery
- Training of local teams ensures that knowledge remains on site in the long term
- Interdisciplinary collaboration – surgery, anaesthesia and nursing working hand in hand
- Every mission is privately organised – including travel, material logistics and follow-up
The full WAZ article examines both missions in detail and shows the passion and dedication behind this commitment.
