For the first time, the charity regatta "Rowing Against Cancer" will take place on the Ruhr in Hattingen. On 16 August 2015, recreational teams, hospital crews, and locally connected companies will take to the water to use their muscle power to support sporting programmes for cancer patients. The patron is the President of the NRW State Parliament, Carina Gödecke.
A Family Festival on and by the Water
Chief coordinator Mario Kleist, Administrative Director of the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Hattingen, promises a major event with wide appeal. Up to 60 boats are expected to compete, accompanied by a stage programme, food, and participatory activities. Even in rain the atmosphere is guaranteed – the rowing community is weather-proof, and visitors can look forward to marquees, refreshment stands, and musical highlights.
How to Participate
Companies, clubs, and groups of friends enter as a double scull with cox. The entry fee includes intensive training provided by the Hattingen rowing clubs, so that beginners can sit confidently in the boat. Each team is scheduled for at least two heats, with the best boats then competing for victory.
- ✓At least 50 registered boats – entry fee 300 euros per team
- ✓Training package from the rowing clubs included to prepare recreational rowers
- ✓Double scull with experienced cox – at least two heats per boat
- ✓On-shore programme with food, music, and family activities
Donations That Move
Two thirds of the entry fee go as a donation to the "Augusta bewegt" programme. The aim is to establish sporting programmes that accompany cancer patients through treatment and aftercare. Since 2005, more than 50 regattas have taken place across Germany – with over 15,000 participants. Hattingen builds on this success story in 2015 and aims to provide long-term funding for sporting activities for those affected.
Together for a Good Cause
The list of supporters is long: 80 employees of the Evangelische Stiftung Augusta, 40 DLRG volunteers, the Hattingen rowing clubs, schools, and local companies all ensure smooth running. Kleist sums it up aptly: "Everyone is pulling together – no cancellations, no complaints. Everyone is focused on the cause."
