Missteps – Changes and Wear of the Feet

Feet carry us through life. This article shows what loads they must bear, how complaints develop and when specialist foot surgery contributes to lasting relief.

The Foundation of Our Body

Our feet cushion every step, maintain balance and adapt to different surfaces. It is often only when pain occurs that many people become aware of the extraordinary performance they deliver every day.

Narrow footwear, prolonged standing and neglected foot care promote misalignments. Flat feet, fallen arches or splay feet alter the body's statics, and pain manifests not only in the feet but frequently in the knees, hips or back as well.

Common Complaints and Causes

Corns (clavi) develop through pressure and friction – for example when toes overlap or shoes are too tight. They can initially be treated with salicylic acid plasters; for recurrent cases, surgical correction of the toe position is helpful.

Ingrown toenails cause inflammation and severe pain. Correct cutting – straight across, not too short and with the corners slightly rounded – helps to prevent them. In advanced cases, a minor surgical procedure provides relief.

Hallux valgus is one of the most common deformities. It usually develops on the basis of a splay foot; the resulting pain and bursitis require early diagnosis to prevent the progression of joint deterioration.

  • Podiatric care reduces pressure points and calluses
  • Custom-made orthotics stabilise foot statics
  • Early medical assessment prevents long-term damage

When Conservative Measures Are Insufficient

If pain persists despite orthotics and physiotherapy, foot surgery evaluates targeted corrections. Hallux valgus operations, tendon transfers or joint fusions restore alignment and ensure load-bearing capacity.

Following an operation, immobilisation, graduated weight-bearing and physiotherapy are required. This protects the tissue, builds up the musculature and maintains mobility in the long term.

Prevention Pays Off

Appropriate footwear, regular foot care and targeted exercises keep the musculoskeletal system fit. Those who listen to warning signs early preserve their mobility and quality of life – at every age.

FAQ

When should I seek medical advice for foot pain?

If pain persists for more than a few days, recurs regularly or restricts load-bearing capacity, an orthopaedic examination is advisable. Early diagnosis prevents secondary damage.

Do orthotics always help?

Orthotics stabilise the arch of the foot and relieve the joints. They work best in combination with foot exercises, appropriate footwear and – if necessary – physical therapy.

When is surgery indicated?

Surgery is indicated when conservative measures are no longer sufficient or when misalignments are already causing joint damage. Procedures are planned individually and take everyday life and occupation into account.

How long does recovery take after foot surgery?

Depending on the procedure, several weeks of reduced activity should be anticipated. Specialist dressings, orthoses and physiotherapy accompany the healing process. Consistent aftercare ensures the long-term outcome.
