Knee joint denervation according to Dellon: pain-conducting nerve fibres are selectively deactivated – joint mobility is preserved.
Every second 60-year-old suffers from joint problems, in most cases osteoarthritis, which frequently causes severe pain. For chronic knee pain, Dr. Karl Schuhmann applies a procedure established in the USA: knee joint denervation according to Dellon. In this technique, only the pain-conducting nerve fibres around the knee are divided – the joint itself is not opened.
The method is suitable when conservative therapies have been exhausted. Advantages include: short procedure time (~30 minutes), anaesthesia via regional nerve block (no general anaesthesia), brief hospital stay. Mobility is preserved and frequently improves, as the pain is eliminated.
Who is the method suitable for?
- Treatment-resistant pain despite conservative measures
- High surgical risks for major joint operations – a gentle alternative
- Desire for rapid mobilisation with a short recovery period
