Report on knee joint denervation in an 88-year-old patient suffering from pain due to osteoarthritis.
Knee denervation is an efficient procedure for relieving pain in the knee joint. In this minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia, only the pain-conducting nerves of the knee joint are disabled. The knee joint itself is not opened during this method. Sensation throughout the entire leg remains unaffected. This minor surgical intervention can delay or even entirely avoid the need for a knee operation involving the implantation of a knee joint prosthesis.
The knee may still swell in the future, and changes in bones, cartilage, or ligaments cannot be healed. However, this procedure reduces pain to a tolerable level or eliminates it entirely. The mobility of the knee is preserved and often even improves, as the pain that was restricting movement is eliminated.
