Macrolane Temporarily No Longer Recommended for Breast Treatment
31 May 2012
Due to the ongoing disagreement among radiologists regarding the appropriate method for imaging a breast treated with Macrolane, the manufacturer has now decided to no longer recommend Macrolane for breast augmentation.
The hyaluronic acid-based injectable was previously used for body contouring of the calves, buttocks, and indentations following liposuction. Its advantages included non-surgical application and minimal recovery time.
The primary concerns relate to challenges in mammography. Radiologists have difficulty distinguishing the injected gel from breast cysts on X-ray images, which complicates diagnosis. The article notes: "A breast treated with Macrolane may need to be examined using digital mammography or other ultrasound investigations."
A European medical commission investigated appropriate imaging protocols. Dr. Schuhmann's practice emphasises that existing Macrolane breast patients have no safety concerns and require only routine follow-up examinations.
