Augusta Kliniken Hattingen / Bochum, 17 August 2015
The first Hattingen Charity Regatta "Rowing Against Cancer" was a great success despite unfavourable weather conditions. Approximately 1,500 spectators came to the banks of the Ruhr to follow the charity event.
Hattingen Teams Triumph
The competition comprised five racing categories with impressive local participation. Four winners came from Hattingen, including "Die Plastiker", the men's team from the Clinic for Plastic/Aesthetic Surgery and Hand Surgery at the Evangelisches Krankenhaus under captain Dr. Karl Schuhmann.
As one participant remarked: "We practise our sport in nature – there is no bad weather, only bad clothing."
Fundraising Success for "Augusta bewegt"
The event generated approximately 30,000 euros after deducting costs, which will benefit the "Augusta bewegt" programme in support of cancer patients. Organiser Mario Kleist reported exclusively positive feedback: "All the emails were encouraging. Nobody complained."
Extensive Volunteer Support
The event mobilised extensive volunteer support, including 80 members of staff from the Evangelische Stiftung Augusta, 40 DLRG lifeguards, student nurses, and numerous other helpers. The technical coordination included dismantling work that continued until 9:30 pm.
Future Plans
The event organisers confirmed their intention to repeat the regatta, with hopes for better weather and possibly aerial footage using drones at future editions.
