Breast Reconstruction After Breast Cancer

RTL Punkt 12 highlighted how important breast reconstruction can be following cancer treatment. For many patients, the procedure means regaining a sense of normality and self-confidence.

From Diagnosis to Reconstruction

After tumour treatment, there is often insufficient tissue to maintain a naturally shaped breast. In the television report, Dr. Karl Schuhmann explains the questions that must be addressed before reconstruction: What treatment was carried out? How much skin is available? Which method suits the patient's life situation?

Implant or Autologous Tissue?

When sufficient skin is present, the breast can be rebuilt using expanders and implants. If additional volume is required, autologous tissue transfers – for example from the lower abdomen – are used. The healthy side is often adjusted with a lift or reduction to achieve symmetry.

Psychological Support

Breast reconstruction is not only a surgical but also an emotional process. Conversations with psycho-oncologists, support groups, and individual counselling help to reduce anxiety and build realistic expectations.

Aftercare and Fine Corrections

Compression garments, lymphatic drainage, and patience are essential. In a second stage, the nipple can be reconstructed or replicated with a tattoo. Regular follow-up appointments ensure that the reconstructed tissue develops optimally.

FAQ

What steps does breast reconstruction involve?

Following tumour treatment, either immediate reconstruction or delayed reconstruction is performed. Options include expander-implant concepts or autologous tissue reconstruction.

How long does rehabilitation take?

Depending on the technique, the recovery period is between 4 and 8 weeks. Physiotherapy and scar care support the outcome and mobility.

Can the nipple be reconstructed?

Yes. After reconstruction, the nipple can be shaped using local flap techniques and colour-matched with a medical tattoo.

Who covers the costs?

Reconstructive procedures following breast cancer are medically necessary and are fully covered by statutory health insurers.
