Nipple Reconstruction after Breast Cancer

Nipple reconstruction is for many patients the symbol of leaving their illness behind. The procedure, accompanied by RTL Punkt 12, demonstrates how precise techniques create a harmonious overall appearance.

The Emotional Conclusion of Breast Reconstruction

After tumour surgery, reconstruction, and follow-up treatment, many patients long for a sense of normality. Nipple reconstruction often represents the final step on this journey.

It completes the reconstructive process and helps patients to experience their reflection as harmonious once more. The RTL Punkt 12 report demonstrates how important sensitive support is during this phase.

Methods of Nipple Reconstruction

Various techniques are available for reconstruction. Local skin advancement flaps are frequently used to shape a small, three-dimensional nipple.

The areola area can additionally be created using skin grafts or medical pigmentation. In selected cases, implants or combined techniques are used to optimise volume and symmetry.

  • Local flap plasty: existing skin is modelled
  • Skin grafting: colour matching of the areola
  • Medical tattooing: supplementary pigmentation for a natural appearance

Timing, Aftercare, and Everyday Life

Reconstruction is carried out once the scars are stable and no oncological treatments are contraindicated. The optimal timing is determined in collaboration with oncologists and plastic surgeons.

After the procedure, rest, moisturising care, and UV protection ensure that the new nipple heals well. In some cases, the result is perfected by subsequent pigmentation.

FAQ

When is the ideal time for nipple reconstruction?

Reconstruction is usually carried out several months after the completion of breast reconstruction, once the scars are soft and stable and no further radiotherapy is planned. The treating oncologists coordinate the timing together with the plastic surgery team.

Which methods are available?

Depending on the tissue situation, local flap techniques, skin grafting, or medical pigmentation (medical tattooing) are available. The aim is always a natural appearance and a stable shape.

How involved is the procedure?

Compared with breast reconstruction, the operation is usually brief and can be performed on an outpatient basis. The skin is shaped with precise incisions; occasionally additional tissue strips or grafts are required.

How do I care for the reconstructed nipple?

During the first few weeks, dressings and soft compresses protect the delicate tissue. After healing, scar care, UV protection, and — if planned — medical pigmentation support a long-term, aesthetically pleasing result.
