Vital.de presented autologous blood therapy (PRP) as a natural solution for hair loss. Dr. Karl Schuhmann explains how autologous plasma stimulates the hair follicle and why the method combines particularly well with other treatments.
What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)?
PRP stands for "Platelet Rich Plasma". From a small blood sample, a concentrate is obtained by centrifugation that contains a high concentration of platelets (thrombocytes).
These platelets are rich in growth factors, which are injected into the scalp where they stimulate blood circulation, promote cell regeneration, and activate the hair follicles. As the material is derived from the patient's own body, allergic reactions are virtually excluded.
The PRP Treatment Procedure
Blood Draw
First, a small amount of blood (similar to a routine blood test) is drawn from the arm vein. The volume is approximately 10–20 ml.
Centrifugation
The blood is processed using a specialist centrifuge procedure. The platelet-rich components are separated from the rest of the blood to obtain a highly concentrated plasma.
Injection into the Scalp
The obtained PRP is injected into the affected areas of the scalp using fine needles. The growth factors are delivered directly to the hair follicles.
Aftercare & Recommendations
After the treatment you will receive aftercare recommendations. The entire session takes approximately 30 minutes – including consultation, photographs, and documentation.
What PRP Can Achieve
Mechanism of Action
- ✓ Extends the active hair growth phase (anagen phase)
- ✓ Improves blood circulation in the scalp
- ✓ Promotes collagen production
- ✓ Stimulates the hair follicles
- ✓ Reduces inflammation
- ✓ Strengthens the hair roots
Visible Results
- ✓ Hair appears stronger and denser
- ✓ Reduced hair loss after 6–8 weeks
- ✓ Visible hair regrowth after 3–4 months
- ✓ More resilient hair
- ✓ Improved hair quality
- ✓ Long-term stabilisation possible
"For optimal results, we combine PRP with microneedling, LED light therapy, or topical agents such as minoxidil. For pronounced hair loss, PRP is also used alongside hair transplants to improve the take rate and healing."
— Dr. Karl Schuhmann
When Is PRP Particularly Suitable?
Diffuse Hair Loss
For evenly distributed hair loss across the entire scalp. PRP activates dormant hair follicles and increases the density of existing hair.
Postpartum Hair Loss
Hormonal hair loss frequently occurs after pregnancy. PRP supports natural regeneration.
Hair Transplantation
As an adjunct therapy before and after a hair transplant, PRP improves the take rate and accelerates healing.
Improving Hair Quality
Even without acute hair loss, PRP can strengthen the hair structure, add shine, and promote overall hair health.
