Treatment of your breast malformation Düsseldorf
Auf dieser Seite
The female breast is a paired organ. Minor differences in the appearance of the breasts are not uncommon, and in most cases women do not find them troubling. However, when the differences in size or shape between the individual breasts are significant, or in rare cases where they have not developed at the same level, this can be a source of distress for many women. A breast malformation often places a considerable psychological burden on those affected.
Abnormal breast development is usually not identified until the onset of puberty. The final presentation of a breast asymmetry, however, only becomes apparent after puberty is complete. Breast malformations and breast asymmetries present in a variety of forms. A number of different malformations of the breast and nipple are known. On the one hand, the mammary gland, the nipple, or the areola may simply be absent; on the other, there may be excess glandular tissue or a supernumerary number of nipples. Changes in hormonal balance can also give rise to pronounced breast asymmetry. In addition to genetic and physiological causes, breast malformations may also result from an injury or accident.
If you are affected by a breast malformation, you are in the very best hands with plastic surgeon Dr. Karl Schuhmann in Düsseldorf.

What is pectus carinatum?
A "pectus carinatum" (pigeon chest) affects many people. It is a relatively rare condition in which the sternum protrudes outward, taking on a characteristic shape reminiscent of an elephant's trunk. This phenomenon is referred to as a "pectus carinatum". Many patients feel alone in dealing with this breast malformation –Dr. Schuhmann is here to support you as a globally recognised breast specialist.
Pectus carinatum, also known as "Pectus arcuatum", can present in various degrees of severity. In some cases the protrusion of the sternum is minimal, whilst in others it can be pronounced and clearly visible. The precise causes of pectus carinatum are not fully understood; however, genetic factors as well as environmental and developmental conditions may play a role.
People with pectus carinatum may experience a range of problems and complaints, including cosmetic dissatisfaction due to the unusual appearance of the chest, breathing difficulties – particularly during physical exertion – as well as pain in the chest area. Treatment options depend on the severity of the abnormality and the associated symptoms. In some cases, non-surgical treatment may be recommended, consisting of physiotherapy exercises and the wearing of specially designed orthopaedic braces to guide the sternum into a more normal position. In pronounced cases, or where aesthetic correction is desired, surgical correction may be necessary. This involves surgically realigning or reshaping the sternum so that the protrusion can be corrected.
What is a tubular breast deformity?
A tubular breast, also known as pectus excavatum, is another type of chest wall deformity affecting the sternum. In contrast to pectus carinatum, where the sternum protrudes outward, in pectus excavatum the sternum is curved inward. This creates a funnel-shaped depression or indentation in the chest. The depression can range from mild to severe, with varying degrees of presentation.
Tubular breast deformity is likewise a rare anomaly and may have both genetic and other causes. Some patients with pectus excavatum may experience no symptoms or only mild complaints, whilst others suffer from breathing difficulties, cardiovascular impairment, back pain, or psychological distress due to the appearance of the chest.
The treatment options for a tubular breast deformity depend on the severity of the deformity and the associated symptoms.Dr. Schuhmann is an experienced plastic surgeon specialising in breast malformations, and is here to support you in a personalconsultation with understanding and a focus on finding solutions. Should surgical correction be required (in which the sternum is surgically adjusted to correct the indentation and restore a more natural breast shape),Dr. Schuhmann will create an individualised treatment plan tailored to your needs.
What is gigantomastia?
Gigantomastia is a rare breast malformation characterised by excessive and uncontrolled enlargement of the breasts in women. The breasts can become unusually large, far exceeding normal proportions. This excessive enlargement can cause considerable discomfort and impairment, including back and neck pain due to the additional weight of the breasts, as well as skin irritation and infections in the skin folds beneath the breasts. Furthermore, women with gigantomastia may experience significant psychological distress as a result of the appearance of their breasts. This affects not only self-confidence but also overall quality of life. The causes of gigantomastia can be varied and include hormonal disorders, genetic factors, or certain medical conditions. In cases where gigantomastia is functionally limiting, treatment may require surgicalbreast reduction (mammary reduction) in order to reduce the volume and weight of the breasts whilst simultaneously restoring a natural and aesthetically pleasing breast shape.
What is macromastia?
Macromastia is characterised by an above-average enlargement of the breasts in women, though not as extreme as gigantomastia. Women with macromastia have larger-than-average breasts, although the degree varies from person to person. Complaints range from back pain, neck pain, and postural problems to skin irritation. In addition, macromastia can affect self-confidence and psychological wellbeing, particularly when women feel self-conscious about the appearance of their breasts. The causes of macromastia can likewise be varied and include hormonal changes, genetic factors, or certain lifestyle factors. Treatment for macromastia may involve conservative measures or surgicalbreast reduction / breast lift. A plastic surgery procedure can reduce the volume and weight of the breasts whilst simultaneously creating a natural and aesthetically pleasing breast shape.

Hybrid breast augmentation brings together the best of two worlds in breast surgery. This procedure combines breast augmentation with implants and breast augmentation with autologous fat transfer.
Inverted nipples are also referred to as retracted nipples. When the nipples are permanently non-protruding, the condition is known as true inverted nipples. The cause is usually a congenital shortening of the milk duct system. The desire to find out more about inverted nipple correction often arises for aesthetic reasons. There are various techniques for correcting inverted nipples – even without incisions. However, techniques that do require incisions will nowadays leave virtually no visible scarring. The inverted nipple correction in which the milk ducts are divided is the most common nipple procedure, as it prevents the nipple from inverting again following the treatment. The disadvantage of this method is that, due to the division of the milk ducts, breastfeeding is no longer possible. Nipple sensitivity is generally preserved, though it may be slightly reduced compared to before. The goal of inverted nipple correction in Düsseldorf is to restore the nipple to its natural, projecting position and to help the women concerned regain greater self-confidence. Inverted nipple correction can also be performed in combination with another breast procedure, such as a breast augmentation, breast reduction, or breast lift.
Breast reconstruction enables women to rebuild their breast following mastectomy or breast cancer. Dr. Schuhmann offers a range of techniques – from implant-based breast reconstruction to reconstruction using autologous tissue (DIEP flap, TRAM flap). The goal is to restore a natural appearance and the patient's feminine sense of self.
