Skin tightening after weight loss: abdomen, arms, and thighs

You have lost weight – perhaps through a change in diet or with the help of weight-loss injections? The weight has gone, but the skin is no longer springing back fully?

On the abdomen, upper arms, or thighs, folds, sagging skin, and irregular contours remain. These and similar changes are common, and they are not merely a cosmetic concern. They can restrict movement or place a burden on overall body confidence. At artethic® Dr. Karl Schuhmann & Colleagues, we support you with effective skin tightening treatments tailored to your individual findings: surgical, gentle, minimally invasive, or a combination of methods. The prerequisite is a thorough consultation and assessment. We warmly invite you to arrange your appointment in Düsseldorf.

Body contouring after weight loss: the key facts at a glance

  • The goal is to restore contours following weight loss and to permanently remove loose, excess skin from the abdomen, arms, and thighs.

  • The causes: rapid weight loss, often as a result of radical dieting or weight-loss injections. Skin elasticity decreases.

  • Typical areas include the abdomen (lower abdomen, flanks), upper arms ("bingo wings"), and the thighs (inner aspects).

  • Methods: surgical lifting, radiofrequency treatments (Quantum Body, Morpheus8, BodyTite) with fat reduction (lipolysis) for moderate skin laxity.

  • The result: a defined, aesthetic silhouette and firmer tissue.

  • Recovery time: a few days to two weeks, depending on the method.

  • Costs: from approximately €3,500 (upper arms) to €5,500 (abdomen); precise planning following individual assessment. Ines: Please review.

Visibly sagging skin develops most commonly on the abdomen. On the upper arms, so-called bingo wings (hanging tissue) can form, and these are also frequently seen. Both phenomena can affect younger people as well. Skin laxity on the thighs is usually less pronounced, but depending on skin condition and the degree of weight reduction, it can also present an aesthetic or functional problem – for example, through skin chafing during movement.

Important to know: once excess skin has developed, it cannot be reduced through muscle training or exercise.

Typical areas after weight loss

  • Abdominal area: excess skin below the navel, skin folds, and a sunken umbilical region.

  • Upper arms: sagging skin (bingo wings), visible even after modest weight loss.

  • Thighs: loose tissue on the inner aspects. Chafing or excess skin when sitting or walking.

  • Hips/flanks: uneven skin tightening.

The most common treatments after weight loss

Surgical lifting

  • Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck): the most common treatment. We remove the excess skin and, where necessary, tighten the entire connective tissue layer.

  • Upper arm lift (brachioplasty): we tighten the inner aspect of the arm, combined with liposuction where required.

Both treatments can, depending on individual circumstances, also be performed within a single surgical session.

Minimally invasive body contouring after weight loss

  • Quantum RF Body: radiofrequency-based skin tightening. Suitable following surgical treatments or for moderate skin laxity.

  • Morpheus8: medical needling combined with fractional radiofrequency. For mild to moderate skin laxity.

  • BodyTite: fat reduction and skin tightening. Particularly well suited to the abdomen and upper arms.

These minimally invasive treatments are highly effective and tissue-sparing, but are not sufficient on their own where there is truly significant skin excess.

Results

  • Lifting and improved contours, natural body shape

  • Surgical methods produce the most significant results in cases of extensive skin excess

  • Non-surgical methods achieve moderate yet harmonious results

  • Skin quality, age, and regenerative capacity all influence the outcome

A thorough examination and detailed consultation at a specialist practice for plastic and aesthetic surgery are the foundation of any skin tightening treatment – whether surgical (abdominoplasty) or minimally invasive (Quantum Body). Frequently asked questions

When is abdominoplasty or upper arm lifting after weight loss appropriate?

A body contouring treatment such as an abdominoplasty or upper arm lift may be appropriate when excess skin is present. This often occurs following rapid or significant weight loss and cannot be satisfactorily resolved through exercise or diet alone. Importantly, any tissue tightening – whether surgical or minimally invasive – should only take place once you have reached your target weight.

Which minimally invasive lifting treatments are available?

Using radiofrequency (Quantum RF Body, Morpheus8, or BodyTite), we can gently contract the skin, reduce fat depending on the method, and improve skin firmness. These treatments are highly effective and involve neither large incisions nor prolonged downtime. However, in cases of more significant skin excess, these treatments are generally not sufficient on their own. They can, nonetheless, be a valuable complementary option to strengthen the tissue, or a suitable choice for mild to moderate laxity.

What risks should I be aware of following body contouring treatments after weight loss?

Side effects are possible with all medical treatments. These range from swelling in the treatment area and bruising through to sensations of tightness or wound-healing issues. A thorough medical consultation is therefore essential.

How long is the healing process, and when will I see the results?

Depending on the method, downtime ranges from a few days to approximately two weeks. The final result only becomes apparent after several months, once swelling has subsided and the tissue has stabilised.

Can the arms and abdomen be treated at the same time?

Combining skin tightening in multiple areas is generally possible, provided the overall demands of the surgery are taken into account. In many cases, a staged approach is recommended in order to manage healing optimally.
