Sweat Gland Removal for Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating, medically known as hyperhidrosis, affects many people. Daily life and quality of life are often impaired – yet this problem can be effectively resolved. At artethic®
Dr. Schuhmann

& colleagues, we treat you with the most effective methods for sweat gland removal: injections with muscle relaxants and sweat gland liposuction.

  • Effective Relief Through Muscle Relaxant Injections

Our Treatment Methods

1. Muscle Relaxant for Sweat Gland Treatment

With this method, we introduce the active substance
botulinum toxin

A (
Botulinum

) directly into the skin. The muscle relaxant blocks the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. Sweating in the treated areas – e.g. the armpits, hands or feet – is significantly reduced. The effect begins a few days after treatment and lasts for several months.

Benefits:

  • Effect begins within a few days

  • Treatment takes only 10–20 minutes

  • Results last approximately 5 to 9 months

  • No downtime. You can resume your normal activities immediately

2. Sweat Gland Liposuction (Suction Curettage)

The sweat glands in the underarm area are permanently removed. To achieve this, we inject a special solution into the skin to loosen the tissue. The sweat glands are then carefully suctioned out through small incisions. The treatment takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia.

Benefits:

  • Sweat glands are permanently removed

  • Approx. 70% of sweat glands are removed

  • Rapid recovery

  • Significantly improved wellbeing

3. Combination of Muscle Relaxant and Liposuction

Sometimes a single method is not sufficient. In such cases,
Botulinum

injections can initially help to reduce sweating quickly. A subsequent sweat gland liposuction then provides a permanent solution. This combination delivers immediate relief and long-term results – particularly in cases of severe sweating.

Why Sweat Gland Liposuction?

  • Permanent: A single treatment, with long-term reduction in sweating.

  • Outpatient & safe: Performed under local anaesthesia at our practice.

  • Rapid effect: The result is noticeable immediately after the treatment.

  • Minimal downtime: You can resume normal activities within just a few days.

After the liposuction, you should rest for one to two days and refrain from sport for at least one week. Light compression dressings are sometimes advisable to support wound healing. In general, the healing process is straightforward, as only very small incisions are required. The effect is noticeable immediately after the treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What happens during sweat gland injections?

At our practice in Düsseldorf (artethic® Dr. Schuhmann & colleagues), we inject the muscle relaxant botulinum toxin A (also known as Botulinum) into the skin in the area to be treated – for example the armpits, palms or soles of the feet. The substance blocks nerve impulses to the sweat glands. The effect begins within a few days.

What are the costs of a sweat gland treatment?

The cost depends on the method chosen (injection or sweat gland removal). Prices for permanent sweat gland removal (liposuction) start from €3,000. We would be happy to prepare an individual cost plan for you during your consultation.

Can sweat glands on the face also be treated?

In principle, treating sweat glands on the face is possible – for example in cases of excessive moisture on the forehead or upper lip. Here, the muscle relaxant is injected with great care and precision so as not to impair the function of the facial muscles. A thorough medical assessment prior to treatment is particularly important in these cases.

Where are the most sweat glands located?

The highest density of sweat glands is found in the armpits, on the palms, the soles of the feet, and on the face (forehead and upper lip). In total, every person has approximately two to four million sweat glands distributed across the entire body.

Can sweat glands in the armpits be permanently removed?

Yes, through sweat gland removal (liposuction or suction curettage), approximately 70–80% of the sweat glands in the underarm area can be permanently removed. The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia at the practice artethic® Dr. med. Karl Schuhmann & Kollegen in Düsseldorf. The result is generally permanent, and follow-up treatments are rarely necessary.

Is excessive sweating also related to the thyroid?

In some cases, an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can cause excessive sweating. Before any sweat gland treatment, we therefore check during the medical history consultation whether hormonal causes have been ruled out. If the thyroid is healthy, local sweat gland treatments are appropriate and usually highly effective.

What sweat gland treatment methods are available?

At our practice in Düsseldorf, we offer two established methods: Sweat gland injections: temporarily block sweat production. Sweat gland liposuction: permanently removes the sweat glands. Depending on the severity and individual wishes, a combination of both methods may also be appropriate. --- <!-- IMAGE: images/hyperhidrose-publikation.jpg -->
