SMAS

The SMAS (Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System) is a connective-tissue and muscular layer that connects the skin, muscles, and deeper structures (connective tissue). Changes within the SMAS are primarily responsible for age-related skin laxity of the face, chin, and neck. In the SMAS facelift, this layer is surgically tightened and repositioned. The results of this technique are generally more natural-looking and longer-lasting than those achieved with purely superficial skin tightening procedures.
