Age Spots
Age spots (Lentigines solares) are harmless, usually flat pigmented spots. They result from years of UV exposure and occur more frequently in older age. Common areas include the face, hands, or décolletage – areas of skin more exposed to the sun. Their brownish color is due to locally increased melanin production. If they are cosmetically bothersome, lasers, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), or during early stages, lightening agents such as retinoids and vitamin C may be treatment options. Consistent sun protection can reduce the formation of new spots.
