Dr. Karl Schuhmann is one of the first surgeons in Germany to have introduced the one-stitch facelift and further developed it over many years. Today, this method is one of the best-known minimally invasive facelift techniques along the jawline. With the right female or male patient, we achieve very beautiful, natural results, but the procedure is explicitly not suitable for everyone. The key to successful treatment is honest, well-founded consultation.
Small lift, big impact?
Hardly any facelift method has been discussed as frequently for years as the one-stitch lift.
The reasons: The method is gentle on the skin, and we only need comparatively small incisions. Downtime is short, and when performed with the right technique, the result looks very natural. All in all, the one-stitch technique is more than convincing for early skin sagging in the lower face.
We recommend this facelift, for example, for patients with a blurred chin contour and the first signs of jowls. The cheek area is tightened in the direction of the temples. A prerequisite is sufficient skin firmness!
A special type of SMAS facelift
The one-stitch lift is one of the SMAS techniques.
The SMAS is a deeper tissue layer made up of connective tissue, muscle, and fat that is largely responsible for tension and contour. We take this structure into account in all modern facelifts– from deep-plane facelifts to neck lifts.
In one-stitch lifting, the tissue is repositioned and gently tightened along the contour of the jawline and the midface. The contour of the jawline becomes more defined toward the temple area. The cheek area is not automatically tightened as well. The nasolabial fold is not removed.
Dr. Karl Schuhmann and the one-stitch lift
Dr. Karl Schuhmann was one of the first specialists to play a leading role in establishing the method. Over the years, it has been adopted by many surgeons.
However, experience from numerous procedures also shows that the method is only successful when the indication is correct.
Or, as Dr. Karl Schuhmann describes it:
“The one-stitch lift is one of the most elegant facelift procedures, but it is not suitable for every patient.”
When is the one-stitch lift suitable?
The following points are decisive:
the initial sagging of the cheek area
Jawline is losing definition
mild jowls (sagging cheeks)
after collagen has already been stimulated, for example with Sculptra
Who benefits most: people who want a visible improvement but don’t yet need a full facelift.
And when rather not?
In cases of significant excess skin, sagging skin, or pronounced neck laxity, a one-stitch lift is not sufficient. Alternatives include other approaches such as the deep-plane technique. With these facelifts, we achieve results that deliver visible effects and last for many years.
Important for a good result:
What expectations does the patient have?
Tip: Tighten your skin in the direction of your temples. In front of a mirror, lift your skin with one finger, with two fingers, or with your whole hand. If you only need one finger, then the one-stitch facelift may be the method of choice for you.
So what is the first step? Clearly, it is an in-person examination. Photos or videos are not sufficient for this, because skin tension, tissue quality, elasticity, and the directions of pull all require direct assessment. To do this, feel free to schedule an appointment in Düsseldorf or Berlin.
Combinations
Depending on the current condition of the skin, we combine the one-stitch lifting with Sculptra or with fillers / hyaluronic acid. This achieves maximum results without downtime and with immediate ability to return to work.
Experience and honest advice
Many of our patients come to us with very specific ideas. A short downtime and no general anaesthesia are frequently requested, as well as a more youthful and defined facial contour. We take time to gain an overall impression:
Which method truly fits?
How much tightening makes sense?
And which procedure will feel right in the long term?
These are important questions. Sometimes the one-stitch lift is the answer. And sometimes alternatives are a better fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a one-stitch lift last?
The result can remain stable for many years, depending on skin quality, tissue structure, lifestyle, and individual anatomy. Significant weight fluctuations or pronounced skin sagging can affect the outcome. To achieve long-lasting results, combinations with, for example, biostimulators are possible, tailored to the skin.
Is one-stitch lifting a substitute for a deep plane facelift?
The one-stitch lift is particularly suitable for early to moderate changes along the jawline and midface. In cases of more pronounced excess skin or sagging skin, other facelift methods such as the deep plane facelift are more effective for achieving a good, aesthetic result that provides satisfaction for many years. The one-stitch lift does not replace the results of a deep plane facelift.
Can the one-stitch lift be combined with other treatments?
At artethic® we combine the method, depending on the condition of the skin, with biostimulators, fillers, exosomes, polynucleotides, and Morpheus 8 radiofrequency. This allows contour, volume, and skin quality to be harmoniously balanced with one another.
