Great joy in Hattingen: The Clinic for Plastic/Aesthetic Surgery and Hand Surgery at the Evangelisches Krankenhaus (EvK) was voted the best training institution of 2016 by the associate members of the DGPRÄC. In doing so, the specialist society recognises the continuous work of the team led by Dr. Karl Schuhmann – from structured surgical training to personal mentoring.
Why the jury was convinced
Resident doctors assess annually where training succeeds at the highest level. Criteria include reliable rotations, well-prepared procedures, supervision and an environment in which questions are welcome. In Hattingen, these building blocks work in concert – theory, practice and follow-up discussion form a single unit.
Three pillars for sustainable learning
Structured Training
Rotation plans, defined learning objectives and regular surgical briefings give resident doctors security and prospects.
Hands-on Mentoring
Senior physicians accompany every stage – from indication through the procedure to aftercare. Feedback is part of everyday practice.
Interdisciplinary Exchange
Collaboration with hand surgery, trauma surgery and dermatology creates a broad spectrum of cases and techniques.
Voices from the Team
"We are not resting on our laurels from this award. It is an incentive to continue improving education and training together with our senior physicians," emphasises Dr. Schuhmann. This includes new observership programmes, structured feedback conversations and workshops with national and international guests.
Benefits for patients
Those seeking medical assistance benefit directly: an excellently trained team guarantees safety, modern techniques and short pathways between diagnostics, surgery and aftercare. For the Ruhr region, the award is also a strong signal – excellence in medicine and the development of future talent go hand in hand.
