AI in Plastic Surgery: What Is Possible Today

Artificial intelligence (AI) is making its way into plastic surgery – not as an autonomous surgeon, but as an intelligent tool for analysis, planning, and consultation.
AI: Practitioner or Consultation Aid?
When artificial intelligence (AI) in plastic surgery is mentioned, you may think of robotic operations. Whilst such systems already exist, they have not yet played a role in aesthetic surgery. The picture is different in imaging, treatment planning, and consultation. Here, modern AI can already provide meaningful support.
AI as a Surgical Assistant? What AI Can Do Today
You will be reassured to know: in treatment, we rely on our experience and expertise. The fine tissue structures are not only complex – they are highly individual.
In reconstructive microsurgery, AI does assist during operations. So far, however, only at certain university hospitals. Systems such as Symani or MUSA-2 are used. AI assists with work on the tiniest vessels under the microscope – for example, in lymphatic vessel suturing or in reconstructions following amputations. But even here, the decision-making, concrete planning, and execution remain with the specialist. As does the responsibility.
Where and How We Use AI at artethic® Dr. Schuhmann & Kollegen
We employ modern AI in skin and hair analysis, treatment monitoring, and the realistic simulation of treatment outcomes. The analysis systems Visia® and Vectra®:
Visia®
Detailed skin analysis across 8 categories – TrueSkinAge™ simulation and treatment prediction.
Vectra®
3D simulation for face and breast – realistic visualisation of implant sizes and contours.
AI Is No Replacement, but, Used Wisely, a Clear Advantage
Analytical Diagnosis
Comparable data in addition to the clinical assessment – for example, regarding UV damage or loss of elasticity.
Visualisation
We can see how the chin, breast, or face might look following procedures or filler treatments. This can make the decision for or against a treatment easier.
Documentation
Skin changes and/or treatment outcomes can be visualised over months and years – a pictorial treatment record.
AI Complements Our Consultation
Individual aesthetic outcomes always require broad specialist knowledge and a confident sense for harmony and naturalness. AI is a tool – not a substitute for clinical experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AI perform aesthetic operations?
No. At present, so-called robotics is not established in aesthetic surgery. All procedures are carried out by experienced specialist surgeons with many years of expertise. AI is used exclusively for diagnosis, planning, and visualisation.
Does AI replace clinical experience?
No. It supports analysis and visualisation; the indication and execution remain the physician's responsibility. Individual aesthetic outcomes always require broad specialist knowledge and a confident sense for harmony and naturalness.
How accurate are 3D simulations with Vectra®?
The Vectra® analysis system is well suited to planning certain aesthetic treatments. We can visually depict possible outcomes prior to the procedure. This simulation can assist in deciding for or against a particular treatment, but it does not constitute a guarantee of a specific result. Healing itself is individual. An additional clinical assessment remains indispensable, which is why AI is for us a valuable tool – but also only that.
What do you use Vectra® for specifically?
For 3D simulations, primarily in breast surgery and facial contouring – to aid decision-making. Vectra® creates realistic three-dimensional models, showing asymmetries and volume distributions. Implant sizes, shapes, and contours can be adjusted and compared virtually.
Can I book the AI-assisted skin analysis Visia® separately?
You can book the AI-assisted skin analysis at artethic® Dr. Schuhmann & Kollegen in Düsseldorf as a standalone service – as part of an initial consultation, for documentation purposes, or as part of a progress review. The costs can be offset against subsequent treatments.
What does AI analysis concretely offer me in the context of an aesthetic treatment?
It shows the current state of your skin or facial contour and documents treatment progress – even over longer periods. Realistic simulations are also possible. This allows us to show clearly how your skin may develop over the course of several years.
Is my data secure?
Yes. Data is processed securely; we do not outsource sensitive processes to AI services. The management of patient data is of the utmost priority. Your data remains safe with us.
When is AI-assisted consultation worthwhile?
When you would like to see how your skin might look in 5, 10, 15, or 20 years. When you would like a visual aid to support your decision. When you would like to see how your skin, contours, or body proportions have changed in the course of a treatment.
