Radiesse® or Sculptra®?

Radiesse® or Sculptra®?

Biostimulators are growing in popularity. The best-known examples are Radiesse® and Sculptra®. Both activate the body's own collagen production, but differ in their mechanism of action, tolerability, longevity, and treatment goals.

Sculptra® generally lasts longer, while Radiesse® offers other advantages. What they have in common: when applied correctly by a qualified professional, very harmonious results are achievable. It is important to us that nothing looks "done" – but rather aesthetic and natural.

Key facts for quick readers

We recommend Sculptra® because it:

  • works naturally
  • can significantly improve skin quality: structure, texture, elasticity
  • lasts up to 2 years
  • is very well tolerated

We recommend Radiesse® because it:

  • delivers immediately visible results
  • stimulates the skin's own collagen
  • offers a volumising effect and long-term stimulation through collagen formation
  • is a popular filler alternative

Similar in approach, different in outcome

R

Radiesse®

Contains a gel carrier and Calcium Hydroxylapatite as its firming active ingredient: a mineral that corresponds to bone composition. The gel visually fills wrinkles – thus producing filler effects.

S

Sculptra®

Stimulates the body to sustainably build its own collagen deep within the tissue. The active ingredient: Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA). The result develops slowly, evenly, and very naturally.

Challenges and special considerations

With Radiesse®, careful and very precise injection is critical to achieving a good result.

With Sculptra®, emphasis should be placed on even injection so that the active ingredient distributes well throughout the tissue.

In both cases, application by an experienced medical specialist is recommended – ideally a doctor specialising in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery. Why? This training requires an exact knowledge of all tissue structures.

Benefits at a glance

We carry out treatments with Sculptra® at our practice in Düsseldorf almost daily. Our experience:

S
Sculptra®

  • Gradual, long-lasting collagen regeneration (up to 2 years), through Poly‑L‑Lactic Acid (PLLA), without mineral components.
  • Natural structural improvement and increased elasticity, ideal for large-area contouring.
  • Also suitable for the body, neck, décolletage, arms, and hands

R

What does truly vital, firm skin really need?

The idea that a youthful appearance can be achieved simply by "injecting away" wrinkles is a myth. A fresh look requires more: sufficient structural proteins, and consequently improved firmness and an even, fine-pored complexion.

The role of collagen

Collagen forms the structural network of the skin. In younger years it provides firm, tight, and plump tissue. The more collagen present, the better. Unfortunately, natural production decreases with age. The result is wrinkles and a sagging appearance. Biostimulators address this by reactivating the skin's natural processes.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Sculptra® treatment involve?

Our doctors introduce the product into the skin via injection at pre-determined points. We use fine needles. The injection itself is mildly uncomfortable but generally not painful. The active ingredient Poly-L-Lactic Acid stimulates the body's own collagen production. The skin gradually renews itself over the following weeks and months.

What does a Radiesse® treatment involve?

The active ingredient is injected similarly to a filler treatment – with fine cannulas and precisely into the corresponding facial region. For example into the cheek area, chin, jawline, or the décolletage. The gel contained provides volume, while the Calcium Hydroxylapatite particles stimulate collagen production. Any redness caused by the injection typically subsides quickly, and most of our patients are able to resume their daily activities immediately.

How many sessions will I need and when will I see the first results?

The number of sessions required varies from person to person and depends primarily on the current condition of your skin and the method used.

With Sculptra®, you can expect to see the first visible changes after approximately one month, depending on your starting condition and dosage; the full result is usually visible after around three months. The skin then appears smoother, more elastic, and fresher. Immediately after treatment the skin also looks plumper, as the volume is temporarily increased by the gel-like PLLA.

Radiesse®, by contrast, shows immediate effects similar to a filler. This is followed by skin regeneration and improvement of the skin's appearance over the course of a few weeks.

What should I be aware of immediately after treatment?

Temporary swelling or redness around the injection sites may occur in the hours following the session. These typically subside quickly. Homeopathic substances such as pineapple enzymes or Arnica D12 can be taken to support recovery.

Important: The treated areas should be massaged for 5 minutes daily for 5 days.

How does Sculptra® differ from traditional wrinkle fillers?

Fillers such as hyaluronic acid or CaHa fillers provide immediate volume and allow us to precisely fill wrinkles. The filler effect diminishes over time as the substance is broken down by the body's own metabolism. Sculptra® works with a delayed effect. The aim here is not to fill, but to achieve a long-term improvement in skin quality.
