Some people find it difficult to seek help because they feel ashamed. Others fear charlatanism and do not know how to find a competent expert. For these reasons too, Dr. Karl Schuhmann opened the Düsseldorf specialist practice for Plastic/Aesthetic Surgery and Hand Surgery last year. 22 years of experience in plastic surgery, 12 of them as chief physician of the Department of Plastic/Aesthetic Surgery and Hand Surgery at the Augusta Kliniken Bochum Hattingen, have shaped Schuhmann's understanding of medicine: "Each individual is a very special patient to me, with their own specific needs." Beauty has a different face and a different significance for every person. The practice's repertoire ranges from minimally invasive and non-surgical treatments to more extensive plastic-surgical procedures in line with the latest international standards. In some cases treatment is medically indicated, such as liposuction for patients with lipoedema or reconstructive surgery following breast cancer. In other cases, the patient's own aesthetic sensibility is at the centre. Whether nasal or ear corrections are desired, anti-ageing treatment or breast augmentation, whether the abdomen or arms are to be firmed: intensive consultations always precede any procedure – Dr. Schuhmann devises a tailor-made treatment concept for each patient. How powerful the influence of a beautiful, or even simply a normal appearance can be, Karl Schuhmann witnesses anew every year in India: there he operates for the medical aid organisation Interplast on people with burns to the face and neck, as well as jaw and palate clefts.
